Service – Recycling and Sustainability

The 2019-20 Recycling & Sustainability service group. (By Mr.Lockwood)

The global issue I would like to focus on is that non-renewable energy consumption and improper handling of recycled materials can increase human ecological footprints, contributing to the crisis of climate change. During my service in Recycling and Sustainability, I hope to address this issue by reducing the ecological footprints around OSC and the nearby community, as well as increasing awareness of the members in the school community by encouraging them to have hands-on experiences to explore in-depth about the environment.

On top of the traditional routine of R&S, during which groups of students are sent to collect recyclable materials from classrooms on campus and sell them at the recycling center at the end of the street, individual and school-based projects will be added.

1. Members of the service group will be encouraged to choose an area of interest under the topic of environment and develop their own capstone projects. An individualized research topic can largely encourage the members to gain insights and improve skills in environment protection. (Past memeber’s Capstone projects includes infographic on home gardening, Youtube videos on sustainability at home during quarantine, etc.)

2. After the usual routine of collecting recyclable materials, we can also host discussions about the ecological conditions and global news about environment in order to boost awareness of students.

3. We will also have the biomass plant working so that it can ensure clean energy resource and consumption of the school. Collaborations with other services associated with environment such as Eco-Schools will also be conducted.

4. Continue the past experiences of campaigning on special days (eg.Earth Day, Earth Overshoot Day, etc) to cut ecological footprints of OSC and have everyone participating. Posters, slogans and assemblies will be made to bring attention to the hot topics regarding sustainability)
