Being part of the E.S.S class we hold an important role when it comes to environmental issues and ways in which we can help lessen their impact on our world. In the OSC campus, we have a biogas plant that uses compost waste from uneaten food to produce gas which can later be used as heat to cook food.
For the past couple of months we have been boiling water and making popcorn from the gas we get from the biogas plant. However, last week we did something a bit more special; we invited the primary class to the biogas plant and taught them how it worked as well as giving them the chance to make popcorn at the end. It proved to be very educational not only for the kids but also for us seen as it gave us a chance to really explain how the plant works and how it’s recycling food to get end results such as more food.
The kids seemed to be very impressed at how it worked, despite their young age. They were amazed at how a simple banana peel and leftover lunch can turn into gas which can be used to boil water very quickly or make popcorn, as an example. I loved the educational experience it gave me and I also enjoyed how it put us in a position to teach kids younger than us about such an important part of our campus.
