CMB FASHION WEEK

Having officially been out of quarantine for a couple of months now, and having been in face-to-face school for 3 weeks, life seems to be returning, to some extent, back to normal. This implies that I’m able to not only socialize more often with friends, but I’m also more prone to go out on the weekends and attend local events. This past weekend, for example, was the 18th annual Colombo Fashion Week; one of the biggest hubs for South-Asian fashion.

Hosted over the course of 3 days, Sri Lankan and foreign models show off different clothing styles, colors and tastes. All the designs are curated carefully by fashion designers typically local to Colombo, with the exception of a few French and German tailors. I had the pleasure of attending the third and last day of the show this past Saturday. Here’s a brief outline of the evening:

  • 7:30 pm- Door Open
  • 8:00 pm- Light Snacks and Drinks
  • 8:30 pm- The Show Begins
  • 9:15 pm- Intermission (advertisements and live music show)
  • 9:45 pm- Final Portion of the Show Begins
  • 10:30 pm- The Show Ends

As a preface, each CMB Fashion Week has a theme, from which different designs and motifs for the clothing items displayed stem. This year, the main theme was the environment and its conservation, with emphasis on the threats posed to the natural world. There was a live musical performance that opened the show, which included a song and spoken poetry about different animals and their extinction, which is directly linked to climate change; something in which humans play a huge role in. It was inspiring yet also eye-opening to hear such words, which were paired with videos of said animals, as it’s scary to know that these things are happening but more so to know that we, as individuals, play a significant part in worsening the prevalent issue.

Other than that, however, the rest of the show was delightful. There were multiple male and female models from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and ages. The music utilized on the runway was engaging, and it was paired with visually aesthetic videos in the background which kept the audience interested at all times. Down below are some pictures of different models that I took during the show, which was hosted at one of the most beautiful hotels in the city, the Shangri-La Hotel.
