Housing and Habitat Q1 Reflection

I am currently the service leader of Housing & Habitat and our goal is to aid our local Sri Lankan community by building useful items. We also teach our members to use their hands and build motor skills by doing carpentry work. This would be like working with a hammer, nails, saws, and drills.

Homerun

We have been preparing all of this year for Homerun, it took us the longest to try and get the video and posters ready. We ran into a lot of difficulties when it came to our organization with the video. We decided to try and finish it on a Saturday but then, of course, it started to rain. We had to try and work our video around the rain. We had the people from Gecko net help us do our video and edit it. They added some of the footage that they got from last years run which pulled the whole video together. The ending scene is of Nehe, Harin and Josh make a house over my head.

The original date for our homerun was the 16th of November but it turned out that it was the same weekend as the election. So, we moved the date to January 15th. This meant that we had to change the video so that the dates would be the same. Matthew was in charge of making the posters for the event. We showed the video at the SAISA assembly and we are planning on showing it on the last day of school so everyone knows when they come back.

This project required a large amount of planning for the run and commitment to the project that we were attempting to pull off.

Project Uplift

We are still moving on with project uplift except that we have misplaced a couple of the chairs. We started off with 6 chairs and now we only have 2. Haring got us the missing wood pieces that we needed and we finally finished breaking all of the pallets. This is something that we want to put into full effect next year and hope to make serious headway with. We have all the tools to achieve starting this project so we plan on making an assembly line and putting together some chairs.

Train tracks for WWW

This has been a very large talking point for our service as we are trying to build a railway track for the children in the Janoda foundation. With this project, there was a large amount of planning that was necessary for everything to come together. We ran out of time to do this in our service so this will be done during their WWW time.

This semester has taught me a lot about my leadership and what I have to do to be an effective leader. This means learning to give people jobs and making sure everyone is working so that the group doesn’t get distracted. I also learnt a lot about the service and what I want us to spread awareness about. This is due to the current events that are happening in the world today for example with the climate strikes and Greta its opening our eyes to how we need to spread awareness to these problems. I am proud that our service got to have a part in helping our school’s climate strike and organizing the day so that we could be a part of spreading awareness to our local community.
