In DP1 I had wanted to pursue two services simultaneously because I was interested in Room to Read and EcoSchools. I had divided my service time to accommodate my presence in both sessions however, realized that this was not a productive way of performing community service. I had chosen to dedicate myself to Room to Read as I would soon inherit the role of service leader. I am proud and happy with the group of people we have and the progress we’ve made so far.
Recently, however, I’ve been more involved with the environmental initiatives our school’s Eco Team has been taking. The Eco Team consists of three service groups: EcoSchools, Housing and Habitat and Recycling and Sustainability.
This team together held an event, Running out of Time on the 2nd of November, it was a baton relay in support of climate change, and the idea of the movement was to raise awareness about the issues we face in our environment. The baton sends a message to the decision-makers at COP27 in Egypt.
My service (Room to Read) didn’t take part in organizing the event, despite this, after consulting with my buddy, Sasindu I got the opportunity to dress up as our school’s mascot: The Gecko.
I initially took this role on as a joke however, later dedicated myself very much to the cause. My constant dancing was proof of my dedication. Because I was unfamiliar with what I was to do as Gecko there were a few mishaps with some of the primary children, despite this, I tried my best to make sure the event was in high spirits.
After gaining this experience I now know that I don’t want to be the mascot ever again, mainly due to the fact that the suit is boiling and the dry clothes you enter the suit with end up completely soaked in your own sweat.
Despite this, I am glad to have been a part of this movement!
