After 9 performances…I’m Still Standing – OSC Spring Gala (April 20th, 2023)
As the title still suggested, I’m still awake and kicking, after the 2023 Songs from movies gala concert spectacular. Trust me, the main motivation for the vibe of this gala was to just have fun, and enjoy! In which I definitely did. I had a performance total of 9 acts, where almost all of them were scattered across the set list. With a brand new stage format and a new vibe, we sang song from movies. My choice being “I’m Still Standing” by Elton John from his biopic, Rocketman. This time I decided to have the motto, of “having fun and enjoying your time on state” and I wanted to bring my vibe to the audience. So, I asked them to participate in the song by clapping and singing along, and to my surprise, they sang loud! With that happening, I had absolutely nothing to worry about. With the other acts I just played my part, looked at Mr. Kim for the changes and tried to keep up (kudos to those who know the reference).
Senior’s Voice, our group ensemble, showed off our solidarity for the song “Stand Up.” A song from the biopic of abolitionist and activist Harriet Tubman, the song details of how she stood up for her people and ended with her last lines “I go, to prepare a place for you.” But we finished off the entire concert with a classic “Seasons Of Love” rendition, from Rent. This was when we kicked in our hype for the soloists, Mai and Akhil and bring a sense of togetherness.
Most probably the most fun act that I participated in was our school rock band, which we named “Resonance.” Because, Mr. Wallace, being our bassist, fellow Physics teacher, so, physics, music, you get the idea. We performed two songs under our debut, which were “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes and “Supermassive Black Hole” by Muse. This was when I decided to show my lead playing skills by tapping away on the fretboard and fast fingers.
But this all makes me realise, I have one more gala concert to play, and it being my last one next year, I will go out and end it with a bang. Time to start planning……..
