Eco Schools x Recycling & Sustainability Crossover

A few service hours ago, Eco-Schools and Recycling & Sustainability joined hands in collecting scrap paper around the school and delivering it to the scrap dealer down the road in front of the school. It was a fun experience as I got to go around the school, exploring parts I have never been in as we collected the scrap paper from each class. While loading them onto the pickup truck we could really see how much waste our school is producing, however it’s great that we are able to recycling all of this paper instead of throwing it away. I’ve never really seen where all the scrap paper goes, so this was an insightful experience as we also learned what the scrap dealer does with it.

Due to the pandemic, we were able to get higher rates on the scraps: Rs 20/kg for 93kg of paper and Rs 40/kg for 12kg of cardboard. We ended up getting Rs 2300 by selling the scraps!

Learning Objectives:

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

By working together and joining forces as service groups, we were able to collect all the scrap around the school and deliver it to the dealer, which made it a way more efficient and smooth process as we had each other’s backs.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

We attempted to tackle the issue of paper waste within our school and instead of throwing them away to collect at landfills, we instead sell them off to a scrap dealer in order to recycle the waste!

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

We recognized that just dumping waste is not a viable solution even though it may be easier. Long term solutions such as recycling waste are way more effective as we are able to make our environment cleaner this way.
