Giving Away Food For The New Year
On the 11th of April I visited my grandparents at Yakkala for the Sri Lankan new year. With the current economic struggles Sri Lanka is under, we thought we could help the needy around the town where some people could barely afford to live on what they are able to scrounge up.
Instead of giving away money straight up, we thought it would be a better idea to give away things that they would actually need for the new year such as food. Thus, at a supermarket nearby we bought some rice, coconut, sugar, biscuits and chocolates which we split into bags and distributed to the underprivileged near the Gampaha station. Although, we only had enough to go around for about 7 people.
In my opinion, it was a great experience to help some people that really need help and was a great chance to provide the community with aid even though we only helped 7 people with their new year. I am glad that we got to make some people happy and hope they have a good new year!
On the way back to colombo we were greeted with a beautiful golden sunset:
Learning Objectives:
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
With how unfortunate the situation is in Sri Lanka, helping out people who are really in need by providing them with some food for the new year
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
It may be really hard for some people to find enough money to have daily meals, especially with the situation Sri Lanka is in. So, we decided to provide the needy with some food for the new year.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Instead of giving away money, it would be more responsible to provide with items that they may want for the new year, such as ingredients to cook milk rice and some snacks.
