Taekwondo: Practicing accuracy with candles

During the 4 day weekend, I visited my grandparents in Yakkala and had some Taekwondo lessons with my teacher there(online).

This week, we worked on our accuracy with candles. To blow out a candle with a kick/punch requires just the right balance between accuracy and power. You cannot blow out the candles if you kick too far, the same goes for if you kick too near as you would just knock the candle down. Thus, to begin training, we first warmed up with a few kicks.

After some time, we moved on to the candles. My brother & I both did a few rounds of kicks & punches as we competed for who could blow it out in one go.

The hardest kick was “Dwi Hurigi”, where one has to turn around from the back and hook kick towards the target. It took me 3 tries to blow out the candle with this kick as I had to focus on my balance as well as my accuracy.

As I just finished my black belt promotion test to Dan 3, it was a good change in pace to train with candles. For next week I will start to learn my new Poomsae(a pattern of movements) called “Taebak” which will be for my next promotion test, in 3 years. Thus, concludes this week’s Taekwondo session.
