Ben's CAS Journey

Snapshots from my learning in the IB Creativity, Activity & Service (CAS) program

Service Semester 1 DP1 – RCCI

For DP1, the service group that I have joined is RCCI. I was previously a member of checkmates for a number of years, but it unfortunately has not continued due to our current climate with the pandemic. Therefore, I decided to join RCCI, which stands for the Rehabilitation Center for the Communication Impaired. The service group typically interact with the children every Thursday. For now, we are in the planning process, and working under the impression that we will be able to interact with the students next semester.

In addition to activities, we have also been brainstorming ways to raise awareness about our service group, and the rehabilitation center in general. We have discussed two ways in which we could do this. The first was to design and sell t shirts around the OSC campus. This would raise awareness on our service group and what we do, encouraging others to join in the future.

The second idea which we like more, is to start a reflective podcast. This podcast would be a group discussion after a session. In this session, we will discuss two things. The first will be a review of the last RCCI session that we had. This would include what we did in the session, whether it worked or not, how much they enjoyed it, and just a general reflection on the session. The second part would be looking into the future. Would we implement the same activities in future sessions, what we would change, and plans for the next sessions.

Both of these would fulfill the learning engagement of engaging with an issue of global importance. Worldwide, there is a negative stigma towards those with disabilities or communication impairment of any kind. This podcast especially, would help not only inform the listener of what we are doing as a service group, but also raise awareness on what these people face in their everyday lives.
