Service is back in action! While all school service groups took a temporary break as the school slowly adjusted into DLP as we began to fall into the routine of online learning we have started up service again this time with a virtual spin. My service group Hope for kids works with the Maharagama cancer hospital and a usual Thursday service involves the group travelling to the hospital to work with the children in a fun session of arts and crafts. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, we, of course, are unable to make visits to the hospital. Instead, we have adapted by organizing crafts for the children via zoom.
Within the first semester, we focused on organizing a Christmas gift donation as well as a Christmas themed craft session. Funds from the service account were used to buy essentials for the hospital which included dry rations as well as stationery items. In addition, we prepared follow along craft videos to be sent along with craft supplies for a Christmas themed craft day. Divided into groups of three we each worked on a separate craft. My group created a video for colour in Christmas ornaments and my part in the project was to create a voice-over in Sinhala.
Our current initiative within the new semester is to conduct a diaper drive for the hospital. With the rapid surge of COVID in Colombo the CCC house is finding it difficult to obtain donations as they try to limit contact with the outside for the safety of the patients. As they reached out to us we are hosting a diaper driver through which we hope to obtain reusable diapers to be donated to the CCC house. We have already made posters and handouts and are also taking the initiative to speak to the younger OSC students during homeroom to bring added awareness to the project.
