This semester I decided to join the editing team of the advocate. The advocate was initially the literary magazine of my school. But over the years it has evolved and its contents have broadened and now we include photography and hoping to include artwork as well. I joined the advocate as I thought it was a great opportunity to work a  school paper that promotes creativity among the student body. As someone who loves painting I know, it can be difficult to publish your work independently and I think the magazine is a great way to help students be confident and gain recognition for their work.

Since COVID has us learning virtually meetings are held via zoom where we check in with our progress on our respective tasks. We have also moved the magazine to a PDF form rather than a hard copy to suit the virtual setting. Additionally, we also have a website for the magazine designed by three of our members. The website serves as a guide for our readers and is updated regularly when new editions are released and on submission dates.

During this semester I was given the task of organizing submissions to the magazine, organizing the email and drive as well as editing the submissions with another member of my team. Next, I also designed a submission poster for the school’s off-screen wellness day and the cover page for the 2019-2020 edition of the magazine. I used Canva to create both pieces and tried to use colour and graphics that were both relevant to the topic and visually appealing.
