CANCER AWARENESS MONTH πŸ’›πŸŽ—οΈ

The “Hope for Kids” service is one of OSC’s oldest services, our ultimate main goal is to help aid the cancer community in Sri Lanka, and we do this by donating different resources such as dry rations, books, and clothes to cancer homes situated in Sri Lanka, such as the CCC house which you can find more information about (https://www.cccfoundationsl.lk/ccchouse) by checking out their website. We have recently partnered up with the Indira Trust Foundation which is also a cancer home similar to the CCC house which specializes in providing accommodation for people diagnosed with cancer and less fortunate people who don’t have anywhere to stay when they come to Colombo for treatments. The goal by the end of the year is to hopefully travel to Jaffna and visit the “Tellipalai Trail Cancer Hospital” which is a cancer hospital that is situated in Jaffna and offers lots of treatment for people diagnosed with cancer, traveling to this hospital I would like to volunteer and also contribute many different resources to this hospital as I think it is something very different to what we have done previously in this service.

As a member of the β€œHope For Kids” service, we urged our school to wear yellow in September to raise awareness for childhood cancer, which is recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Our goal was to demonstrate that, as students of OSC and service members of β€œHope for Kids,” we care about childhood cancer and are working towards aiding those affected by it in Sri Lanka. To accomplish this, we are contributing dry rations and other resources to underfunded cancer homes in Sri Lanka. Additionally, we have recently implemented a new initiative to help one family at a time using the funds we collect from various fundraising events we host, such as the annual cricket match.

We encouraged individuals to wear yellow because it is the closest color to gold, which symbolizes childhood cancer. I am pleased to report that the majority of individuals in our school wore yellow that day, which made me happy to see the support we have from the OSC community. One of the primary reasons behind our efforts was to educate more people in the OSC community about cancer and what our service does.
