Cooking is an essential life skill that we all should possess. It teaches us about planning and patience, gives us a greater degree of independence, and most importantly we know what is going into the food. Cooking is not easy, and there are so many things that can go wrong. Did you mistakenly put in the wrong proportions, or did you forget something? It is quite easy to criticize someone’s food, but when it comes to making it yourself, it can be quite tedious. Since creativity, in general, is an area of weakness for me, I joined a cooking club for block 3. Small Bites is an after-school activity where we learn the basics of cooking. It took place every Monday after-school, and every week we prepared something delicious. At first, it seemed pretty tedious and boring, but the teacher was always so positive and motivated, that it was quite exciting! Every week we did something new like chocolate chip cookies, pizza, or enchiladas. Honestly, it wasn’t easy making anything, but it was worth the effort. At the start of the class, everyone was divided into groups, which not only made the task easier, but it also didn’t take much time. We were usually in groups of four and divided the work equally among ourselves. We did all kinds of tasks: cutting vegetables, cooking rice, making salads, etc.
I was so glad that I joined this class because I didn’t know that cooking could be this fun. Even though I already knew the basic things like cutting and peeling, I learned new techniques which were much more efficient.
