‘The International Mother Language Day (IMLD) is a worldwide annual observance which promotes cultural diversity and multilingualism. First observed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on February 21, 1999, this day reminds us how words empower us and help us communicate with one another. Languages create our basic identities and help us understand different cultures. At OSC, students from over 44 countries are represented which means that there is a lot of diversity. At OSC I am taking the Self Taught Hindi class, and am working to improve my writing and speaking skills. Even though I am a native Hindi speaker, I do not get much practice besides speaking it at home. IMLD was a great opportunity for me to improve my skills and collaborate with my classmates. and so I decided to recite a poem in Hindi. The poem that I chose to recite is called Koshish karne valo ki kabhi haar nahi hoti. This poem was composed by Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala in the late 1900s and he was one of the most famous figures of modern Hindi Literature. In this short poem, the poet tells us to stay determined towards your goal. He says that everyone has to face failure at some point and that the one who continues trying doesn’t get discouraged from failure, and will eventually succeed in the end. The poem was only four stanzas, so my classmate and I decided to say two stanzas each, and after that, we explained the meaning of the poem.
