My extra-curricular activities at OSC

Atlas Labs Visit

Fortunately, my family was able to help me visit Atlas Labs in Sri Lanka. Atlas Labs is a research and development business based in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It focuses on providing technology-based solutions that help organizations optimize their asset value. Atlas Labs is active in a variety of sectors, including smart cities, construction, aviation, and medical research, and it develops new technological products and services. The firm employs a broad mix of engineers, creators, and technicians devoted to producing cutting-edge solutions. Although it was a tour of how their business operated and the variety of things they do, it was also somewhat of a workshop as my cousins and brother, I learned many things from coding to design to 3D printing.

Their office was divided into several sections, one having an area where they created electronic parts and had numerous 3D printers, and the second part included multiple computers where they had a group of people to code apps. I had already been familiar with coding apps such as Figma and the 3D printer software Fusion360 as we learned about many of these in our design class. The most interesting and exciting part for me was seeing the design section. Considering that I have a strong passion for graphic designing this was the most intriguing part of the workshop. Luckily enough I got the chance to use their computers and learn more about their 3D modeling software Blender which I had used in the past. I ended up creating multiple pieces of furniture on the software and included it all in a pre-made room online. I was able to see my creation through their VR goggles. We then went and saw a machine that carved out steel and other metals using lasers, the machine they used is one of 400 in Sri Lanka and is used by Formula 1 teams.

After all the activities and seeing the company’s creations, we had a long talk with one of the managers and two successful businessmen from the U.S. Overall it was a great experience and a place I would love to intern soon, as I am interested in computers and design I was really inspired with all the people working their and the company itself.
