Friday Family Service
Over the past two months, my mother and I have embarked on a deeply fulfilling project to support and appreciate the hardworking individuals who contribute tirelessly to keeping our city safe and clean. Every Saturday, we procure approximately forty packets of rice from a quaint local store near us. This gesture is our way of expressing gratitude to those who endure long, grueling hours under the sun.
We distribute these meals primarily to the Abans workers, who diligently sweep our streets, as well as to the dedicated security personnel stationed at various buildings, and to some employees from the cricket club where we are involved. This act of giving, though small, is our meaningful contribution to supporting these industrious individuals and reinforcing our connection with the community.
Each week, we try to vary the meals to keep them interesting and enjoyable. Typically, these are hearty rice packets accompanied by traditional Sri Lankan curries. On some occasions, we opt for biryani packets, which are a personal favorite of mine due to their rich flavors and aromatic spices. Other times, we choose another traditional Sri Lankan dish, like lamprais, which we often pair with a milk or yogurt packet to round out the meal. This variety not only brings a little excitement to our offerings but also gives us the chance to share a broader taste of our rich culinary heritage. This ongoing initiative not only brings us joy but also allows us to make a small yet impactful difference in the lives of those who work so hard to maintain the beauty and order of our city.
