Alex’s CAS Journey

My extra-curricular activities at OSC

Group 4 project trip

Primary:

#Activity learning – Hiking

Secondary:

#Service learning – Citizen science

During this project, My group and I collaborated throughout the data collection process in various ways. One specific example that stands out is how we collaborated when setting up the plots, by feeding rope, hammering sticks and passing around measurements. Further, we made sure to allocate work evenly in the 4 corners of the quadrant to count the amount of plants, branches, and leaf’s to ensure maximum accuracy.  This also applies for both breast and root girth measurements.

Further, My group and I contributed to Citizen Science, as we are ordinary science students at the Overseas School of Colombo. Are knowledge from are science classes, helped to contribute to how different plots of land should be marked in the Sinharaja rainforest. For example when we discovered that the Ph levels and nitrate levels were surprisingly high, we discovered that this could be an issue, and that the data we collected could help environmental activists and scientists.

To conclude, During the group 4 project exploration, in the Sinharaja rain forest there were a multitude of learning experiences and collaborative opportunities. Through our ability to collect citizen science, of data that could be used to help environmental activists and scientists, we worked in collaboration via setting up the plots  and making sure to allocate work evenly in the 4 corners of the quadrant. We took risks by running through storms at night to search for and learn about amphibians and other topics of biodiversity. Overall our experience had stemmed from knowledge of the 4 OSC sciences. We measured angles and built quadrants using physics, measured nitrate and ph levels of soil via chemistry, and explored biodiversity, and ecology through Environmental systems and Biology.
