Tennis Lesson

Staying active has been difficult for me the last few months, as most gyms, fields, and courts have been closed. However, as the world tries to edge back into normalcy, things are opening up! Yesterday, I went for a tennis lesson with my mom and brother. We played with a coach in the tennis courts behind the Taj Samudra hotel, and had a great time! I have been playing tennis since I was 6 years old, but stopped when I moved to Sri Lanka. I found it difficult to maintain a good balance between academics and studies, and lost touch with the sport for a while. Then, when SAISA seasons started, I chose to start playing badminton in the hopes of making it to the school badminton team. After training hard, I am glad to say I got selected to travel to Mumbai with the team in April 2020! Unfortunately, COVID struck, SAISA was cancelled, and my dreams of traveling for a sports competition drifted away.

Last week, when my mom asked me if I wanted to go for a tennis lesson, I jumped at the opportunity. It had almost 2 years since I had held a tennis racket, and I wanted to see how much of my time playing the sport had stayed with me. As we played, I laughed at myself because I looked like a person who had never played tennis before…but as the time passed, I felt my muscles relax and relive the memory of the sport. I fell into a rhythm, and it was amazing to feel it all coming back to me! However, the coach did tell me that the strokes of the two racket sports were quite different, and should not be learned together. So now, I have a difficult decision to make. Tennis? Or Badminton?

Learning Outcomes:

1. Identify your own strengths and develop areas for personal growth – While tennis might not be one of my strengths yet, it definitely is an area for personal growth. I want to work towards making it one of my strengths, and growing as a tennis player over time.

4. Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences – I have been learning tennis since an extremely young age, and unfortunately had to switch to badminton when I moved here, since the school doesn’t have a tennis team! However, by taking up the sport again, and working to improve my skills, I am showing commitment and perseverance.
