My Role as an Ambassador During Orientation

During the last few years, I have been learning to be a Student Ambassador not just during service sessions, but throughout my time in school. I have been learning to be a more helpful, approachable and caring peer to all my classmates, and someone who they can lean on when they need to. I have also done by best to be welcoming to any new students coming into the school. Through service, I’ve understood that I am a ‘mama duck’ kind of person who really enjoys taking care of people and helping them when they are down.

I have been an ambassador since I was in sixth grade, and I really enjoy it! This year I stepped up to the position of Service Leader. I have been involved in the arrival of new families throughout the summer and winter vacations, and really do my best to ensure that everyone has an easy arrival and is able to settle into our community as soon as possible. Being a new student myself multiple times, I know what a struggle this can be.  Today was the new student orientation and my job was to welcome in the new students and tour them around our school. This was the first time I had come into school since the second wave of the pandemic, and it felt really good to walk the familiar halls again! I took the students around and introduced them to teachers, classrooms, and their lockers!

Overall, I really love being a Student Ambassador, and I’m really glad I chose to participate in this group. I hope to stick with it, and continue improving and learning as a person, and becoming a pillar of strength and support that my peers can lean on.

Learning Outcomes:

5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively – In the group, I work with the school counsellors, and the other ambassadors in order to make our school a more welcoming and inclusive place. I know that I would not be able to do this by myself, and I really value and am thankful for the group I work with!

7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions – Being a student ambassador means that we are being selfless, and by choosing to participate in this group, we are working towards making the school a better place.
