Hope for Kids

This school year, I joined a new service group, Hope for Kids. Last year I was a part of the Student Ambassadors, but the school decided that there wasn’t enough work to consider that group a Thursday Service. I am now the leader of the Student Ambassadors, as well as a new member of the Hope for Kids Service group!

I love my new group! The Hope for Kids service group is led by Kenji and Saesha, and they are definitely fantastic leaders! Our teachers are Ms. Tanuja and Mr. Harp.  The group focuses on creating a nice atmosphere and bringing happiness to children who are diagnosed with cancer. Over the past few years they have been making trips to the hospital to spend time with the children, and engage in creative activities with them.

First service meeting of the year!

This year, our focus has been the upcoming event, Christmas! Every year on Christmas the service group goes down to the hospital to give presents to the children and spend quality time with them in an attempt to keep their spirits high. Unfortunately, due to the spread of the virus, we will be unable to spend Christmas at the hospital this year. Though this is very disappointing, we still have to do our best to make sure they have a lovely Christmas celebration with their families! So for this Christmas, we will be sending the children video tutorials and art supplies to create ornaments that they will be able to hang in the space. We have had a total of three sessions so far, and my group will be making a video showing them how to carefully cut out and colour in a set of templates for paper ornaments.

Additionally, we will be meeting at school next week to wrap presents for each of the children! We want to make sure each child gets at least one gift, which means we will be wrapping more than 100 presents! This will be tedious work, but it is definitely worth the effort when we imagine the smiles and happiness the children on the receiving end will be full of!

We will also be sending some butter cakes to the families. Since I love baking and have lots of experience in making butter cakes, I volunteered to bake the cakes that will be sent over. This will also take some time, since the families of the children will be with them, but I can’t wait to spend an entire day making cakes!

I hope that the efforts we make will bring joy to the children. We are so fortunate and lucky, and I think it’s great that we spend time every week to help bring joy to those less fortunate. I do hope that they enjoy Christmas this year, and that I will be able to go meet the children in person some time soon!
