On UN Day (October 7th, 2022), our French Ab Initio class decided to create a presentation for kindergarten students that was somehow connected to French culture. We decided to make a presentation about the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is a French speaking country. In the presentation we attempted to share interesting geographical and cultural information about the Congo. Additionally, in order to keep the children entertained – rather than simply doing a presentation – we also decided to play Congolese drums and teach the children how to play as well. We taught several beats and patterns on the drums and asked the children to recreate them.
One of the challenges that we faced during the planning of the interaction, was the fact that the kindergarten students have very small attentions spans and will most likely be bored of our regular presentations. As a result, in order to solve this issue, we made sure the presentation was short and to the point, and that many pictures were included to entertain the children. Also, the reason why we decided to bring drums and teach them how to play, was because we understood that the children would not enjoy a simple presentation and this activity would be entertaining.
