Golf With My Dad – 1

Every weekend my family and I go out to play golf. We use it as a way to get outside and to talk about the previous week because we are not distracted by the things around us which always leads to some interesting conversations. I spend most of my golf rounds talking to my dad about many random things that might have happened or a question that might give an interesting reply. On one of these rounds, he said something about the concept of the three different types of characteristics a person can have when communicating.

The three stereotypes were a preacher, a politician, and a prosecutor.

A preacher is someone who beings to preach in order to protect and promote their ideas when they believe that they are beliefs are under threat. The preacher preaches their ideas with great passion and enthusiasm without letting anything alter the perception of the preacher because the preacher believes that they are right.

The prosecutor will try to identify flaws in what others are saying and try to go against it in order to show the other person is wrong and that the prosecutor is right.

Politicians want to get approval from the person they are talking to so they will try to lobby and sell their beliefs and ideas for support and backing from their audience.

It made me realize that I have been all of these characters and I have also been on the receiving end of these three characters. It made me reflect on how each character made me feel but in the moment I also challenged myself to try and be one character all the time. It was a weird concept but I still want to try and be the observer of the characters rather than one of the characters.
