Hard Work Paying Off in recycling service (finally)
After many weeks of recycling paper, and countlessly organizing the recycling room, today was the day to find out what all our hard work was really worth. Because today was the recycling day in service, in its very true sense.
The service began by us paying a visit to the recycling room and finding it clean and organized for the very first time. It was a rather a shocker, but a pleasant one. Convinced that we didn’t have to do any major clean up, we went straight into loading all the recycling boxes into the truck that was to go to the recycling centre nearby. Being the strongest there (Don’s ask how), I did the loading bit, and was of course helped by my fellow mates. And just like that, within 15 minutes, we were ready to head to the recycling centre.
I was accompanied by Dimitri, Philip and Cohen to the centre. The truck ride till there was a rather brief one, as we chatted about our lives (me and Philip laughing hearing the struggles of MYP 4 kids).
Upon reaching there, we finally unloaded all the boxes and gave the people the recycling stuff to weigh and buy it from us at a calculated price. It was all sorts of papers, cardboards, used worksheets, discarded books and many more. It took good 20 minutes for them to actually weigh everything. Meanwhile, we did what every teenager does when they are idle: do stupid stuff on our phones.
At the end, we were handed Rs. 2730, which according to Mr. Lockwood’s was pretty good money. We didn’t make popcorn today, but the money earned today is now going to be invested in various future sustainability projects around school. At the end the aim is to recycle as much as possible (even the money in its economic flow!).
These service sessions have slowly inculcated a sense of responsibility in me, towards nature. It had made me realize the significance of reducing our ecological footprint and how it can be reduced greatly just by the simple act of recycling stuff around. Within our school, through the means of this service, we are currently tackling reducing our food waste production.
I would say, overall, today was a chill service session. Although I did get a bit late for home (wonder why), it was still a nice experience: seeing our handwork of recycling paying off.
