Hope for kids is a service based group, focused on supporting children suffering from cancer. As part of our service endeavours, we have held various fundraising events to rally support for the noble cause. Last year, we orchestrated the Christmas Lights Project, wherein they encouraged donations from generous individuals moved by the festive spirit. Our bake sale further bolstered the fundraising efforts. Embracing this sprit of raising funds and awareness for the kids suffering from cancer, we recently held a cricket match fundraiser, igniting a sense of sportsmanship and altruism within the OSC community.
As a member of the Hope for Kids service group, I took great pride in organizing the cricket match fundraiser. After careful planning and coordination, our team diligently set about executing each aspect of the event to ensure its success. First and foremost, we focused on selling tickets, reaching out to students, parents and even teachers in our school to buy tickets and attend the cricket match. The formation of the cricket teams was another crucial element. To ensure a diverse mix of players representing various aspects of our school community, we ensured that each team constituted of staff members, students and teachers so that everyone was at the same level while playing cricket. Another aspect was inviting diverse food stalls, which enticed the audience with their cuisines and delectable offerings. We were able to have Skinny Suddha on board, along with Belmio’s pizza. In addition to these stalls, we also set up our own dedicated service-based stall, selling refreshing coconut water and ice creams. This provided another source of amount that was to be raised from the event.
I also played in the tournament myself. And although our team didn’t win, it was a great way to embrace the spirit of the event and have such lovely teammates on board with me.
At the end of the cricket event, we were able to raise LKR 243,000 which was one of the highest amounts fundraised by any service group in our school. And it was great to see how our service was seamlessly able to plan the event out.
LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working together. This event wouldn;t have been possible without a collective team effort wherein everyone performed their share of task. I was tasked with decideing on teams with Mr. Russo and also selling tickets.
