Colombo Model United Nations is the oldest UN simulation in Sri Lanka, and the fifth largest student-run MUN conference in the world. “Encompassing simulations of the UN General Assembly and select UN specialized committees, COMUN has been providing an unparalleled platform of debate, diplomacy and leadership for thousands of students from across Sri Lanka for nearly a quarter of a century. We provide a platform for youth to make their voices heard on global issues, and to come together as one to fight back against the deadlock that has fraught much of the diplomatic realm. Through our committees, we provide students with a forum to hone skills in diplomacy, negotiation, critical thinking, compromise, public speaking, writing, and research.” -COMUN, 2018
The executive committee of COMUN, also known as “The EXCO”, runs this conference. The EXCO is expected to serve as exemplary examples of young leaders determined to make an empowering difference; serving on a platform that has for two decades enabled thousands of students from across the country and beyond to deal with the critical global issues that impact us all.
Last year, I was a part of the EXCO of COMUN 2018. I represented the chair of the United Nations Assembly of Drugs and Crime. Initially, the committee is meant to be a special committee (SPEC COM), and internationally known as the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime. However, it was adopted to the conference as a General Assembly (GA). “The UN Strategic Framework for the period 2012-2013 establishes the objectives and expected accomplishments that the UNODC seeks to achieve in pursuance of its mandate related to terrorism prevention.” (UNODC). Through my experience, I learnt a different perspective of MUN, grew as a MUNer, became more knowledgeable and interested in current affairs, and bonded very much with my co-chairs and the rest of the EXCO. It was an experience I would never forget and something I will always cherish.
This year, I am participating in COMUN EXCO as the deputy head of International Press.
