Room To Read Planning Session

Future service endevours

For the past year I had been participating in the Room To Read service group, and have deeply enjoyed contributing and participating in the activities that they conduct. I joined the service group as I was really interested in engaging with various communities and distributing educational material and books amongst them – I think that this feeling was consistent for me throughout the past year.

This year I plan on joining Room To Read once more, and am ready to take upon new responsibilities with this upcoming semester. Room To Read has already begun the allocation of various books and stationary amongst rural schools in Sri Lanka, and they plan on taking more constructional endeavors. Our main goal is to renovate the Vidyaloka Vidyalaya’s library, shown below.

In order for our service group to carry out these plans (building the schools library, patching up certain weaknesses in the building foundation etc.) we would have to collaborate with other associations and raise funds in order to satisfy these plans to the fullest. This was similar to last year, when Room To Read created a pledge in order to accumulate donations.

Therefore, last Thursday, me and a few other service members got together in the library as a way of getting a headstart on these plans.

I believe that I was able to contribute efficiently through the updating of certain aspects of the website and preparing for upcoming potential events hosted by Room To Read – I think that I will be putting my graphic designing skills to use in order to come up with ways of promoting these events and campaigns.

My goal this year for Room To Read would be to handle all my responsibilities to the best of my ability and give my fullest contributions to the service group. I also hope to increase my communicative abilities with the service supervisor, Ms. Lockwood, and with the upperclassmen that participate as well. I think that this semester I’m look forward the most to meeting some of the people from the schools that that we are helping and being able to interact more with them. Namely, Vidyaloka Vidyalaya, which is the school that we have been communicating with the most.

Look out for Room To Read’s upcoming events!

Learning outcomes:

  • LO5 – Working collaboratively with others
    • Room To Read will focus on collaborating with other service members and working together in order to fulfill our goals of helping the community.
    • Last session wasn’t a full service session, however, I was able to communicate effectively with those around me in order to complete the work to our best ability.
