(Our presentation)
Today we had our first newly named Unity In Diversity Day. Apart from the eating of all the food from different countries and cultures (which is the best part of UDD) we also got the chance to work with the primary students to inform them about the UN and their Sustainable Development Goals. Mali and I along with a middle school student had the privilege of working with the grade 1 students. Since they are a bit young to have discussions about the UN and SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) we had to come up with a more creative approach to teaching them about SDG 16 in order to keep their attention and interest. We focused on the peace and justice aspect of the goal because we felt as though these were the most broad and comprehendible aspects of SDG 16. To start off the session we just had a general conversation about peace and what they think about it. This was a good opener and a way to let them be involved from the start. We then went into the actual main ideas of peace such as freedom, inclusivity, and justice along with a few others, this then transitioned into a little activity. The activity is something that Mali and I came up with in order to help them gain a good understanding of peace and justice in a way where they are involved and therefore understand it. After they were done with this, we gave them a small bit of information about the UN and the STGs. They then had their break where they could go and try all the different foods and run around for a bit. Once they came back it was a bit of a challenge to get them back into a learning mode but we managed to do it with another activity which was colouring. The pictures they were colouring were representations of SDG 16 mostly relating to peace and inclusivity. We finished with a discussion on the importance of peace and inclusivity which was a nice way to summarise everything we had talked about that day. Overall it was a very positive experience and I used to be the one who was getting taught by the older kids so it was cool to be the other side of that.
