Care For Paws Sterilisation Camp

Our Care for Paws sterilisation camp kicked off at 8 am at the OSC car park where we all gathered ready for the day ahead. We got in the van that was taking us up to the Army Camp which is where it was held. When we got there we had to give in ID and copies of our passport so that we could be checked and verified to go in. About and hour later we were able to get in through the back entrance closest to the spot where we would be doing the camp. We walked about 5 minutes through the base to get to the spot where the vet and the crew had already set up. They had already done 3 dogs they were still under anesthesia. We got straight to work helping take care of the dogs that had been fix. We then got a run down of the day which was: take care of dogs, we could help give IV and vaccines, feed them, option to watch the sterilisation and much more. We all got involved with taking care of them which was the first thing we did.

After taking care of the dogs that were rolling in we took a quick break for some tea and biscuits which was a nice break from 2 hours of hard work keeping the dogs clean and calm from waking up. After the quick break we were straight back to it but before that we got a lesson on the quick area of the dog in which different things are given for example intramuscular or intravenous injections. We then got to try giving iv putting in IV (intravenous) fluid to help hydrate the dogs as they were unconscious.

We then proceeded on with the day giving IV and feeding the dogs and of course playing with all the puppies that were there. Then suddenly there was a bit of a panic happening in the operating room and we all gathered round to see what was going on and one of the mother dogs had to get a C section and so we got to watch a C section and the mother giving birth to 3 adorable puppies that were absolutely tiny and we had to shake them to get the fluid out of their little lungs so they could start to breath. Then myself and 2 others took care of them making sure they were breathing regularly and we had to keep them warm as well so we tucked them into our shirts and kept them warm while we did other things and helped the other dogs.

Earlier on in the day we got a puppy with one eye and so we named in stitch but luckily we got the infected stitches out of his eye and so we was under anesthesia for a bit was very funny but he woke up very quickly and so he was our mascot he went around to check on all the dogs. One of our group members actually ended up taking him home which was very sweet. We then did some more helping and monitoring and in the end we ended up sterilising 36 dogs and vaccinating a total of 42 which was incredible and we have done a great deed to the community keeping the dog population stable and keeping the community safe. We all challenged ourselves to try something new or to do something that we weren’t comfortable with but it was a very successful camp.
