As an avid performer, the countless cancellations of performance opportunities due to the pandemic was challenging. I missed the feeling of preparing for a show, training alongside friends, standing on a stage with bright lights, the final bow, and the buzz throughout the crowd when a performance is done. I missed the dress rehearsals, the live music, the fast costume changes backstage and the pre-performance excitement. Needless to say, I missed the stage.
In a period of uncertainty, I was tentative to even hope for a final performance opportunity in high school. I poured energy into improving my voice, working on my technique and creating music, maximising the time spent at home and online. Almost like a graduation present, an opportunity emerged… a last Gala Concert in OSC!
I was thrilled to have that final concert as a high-schooler. We started rehearsing immediately. I decided to sing a semi-classical song from Phantom of the Opera – ‘ Think Of Me’. This felt fitting for both my voice, and the context as I am graduating soon. The lyrics reflects a reminiscent mood, urging listeners to remember the character (Christine) and the impact she left behind. Also, my elder sister (Shenali) performed this song when she was in high school. It was truly a full circle moment.
My brother (Akhil) and I decided to perform a duet of ‘You’ll Be In My Heart’ from Tarzan. This was one of my family’s favourite songs growing up, and Tarzan is probably my favourite Disney films ever. I am also part of VOICE – a vocal ensemble group at OSC, and we performed 4 songs. My last role in the concert was to accompany a friends solo (Liam) on the Cajon.
It had been a while since I had performed in front of a live audience, alongside live musicians and singers. The dress rehearsals were nostalgic and fun, as was getting ready on the performance day. The actual concert was a huge success. I felt very grateful for all the performances I have had on the OSC stage, and the way I have grown up in this school, growing as a person and performer through the years. I was also very moved when Akhil gave me a shoutout before his solo, as I am graduating soon!!
All in all, it was a memorable experience which I am super thankful for. While it was my last Gala Concert in OSC, I now look forward to more music and new stages going forward and throughout life !
