Dumpling Endeavors …

Dumplings are a staple in my grandmas home. She is a master chef, and loves to teach us her recipes. Since she is Chinese, she is an expert in Chinese cuisine, as well as others. I have always loved taking down recipes and learning new ones. In fact, I have been compiling, since I was around 13, a recipe book with my family’s recipes from all generations! Since I was young I have also loved to learn from my mum and grandma with their recipes, and I started learning the art of dumpling folding when I was younger.

However, this was very brief and recently I had forgotten the skill I learnt years ago. When we went to Kandy this summer, my grandma once again taught my brother and I the skill, and we helped her make a batch of dumplings.

A couple of weeks later at home, we decided to make dumplings ourselves! My mum is also a master chef, so she made the different fillings, and we all worked to wrap the dumpling batch which was really fun and made us revisit the skill independently. In the end our efforts were celebrated by my grandma, the original chef, and it was a great evening of family time and good food. I hope to make these more often because it was delicious, and also continue to connect with my cultural roots through food and other mediums!

LO2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process A new challenge may be an unfamiliar experience or an extension of an existing one. The newly acquired or developed skills may be shown through experiences that the student has not previously undertaken or through increased expertise in an established area.

This connects to LO2 because I have been working to develop a culinary skill connected to my roots and family, which I hope to expand on and continue!
