The United Nations Day 2021 – CAS Project!

On October 15th, I as the Secretary-General of COMUN 2022 conducted the United Nations Day in collaboration with this years’ Head of Projects Saesha Sampat. We planned and orchestrated this event with the help of Dr. Lundin, Ms. McQuillan, and Mr. Lockwood. [LO3 & LO4]

[Initial Planning meeting notes]
We were still in lockdown during this period of time and we planned to conduct the meeting online. After an interaction and discussion with Mr. Lockwood, I and Saesha also decided to add to our initial plan of the zoom meeting and make the addition of house Padlets of recipes and share recipes from our home countries.[LO2]

[Yellow House Padlet!]
The cumulation of ideas and successfully delegating responsibilities led to a very successful UN day where even in individual classrooms students, as well as teachers, partook by sharing recipes as well as changing their zoom backgrounds to their native flag and/or the UN symbol representing their support for this day. Even during the assembly, a similar spirit was seen and it was really refreshing to witness. Saesha and I planned the assembly by focusing our aim of the CAS project to educate the community of the Sustainable Development Goal 16 of Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions [LO6 & LO7]. We chose this SDG because it is the most relevant to the current situation in the world where institutions are not playing their role in solving this issue of a pandemic and hence, educating the community whilst promoting the spirit of diverse culture seemed like the best option for us as a CAS Project. In preparation for that, I orchestrated several things such as having the tech team from COMUN make the video about the conference on March 2022 and planning how it would look with them. I also reached out to Ms. Jackson for the Annual DP 1 theatre performance on UN Day, which they delivered beautifully.[LO3 & LO4]

[Prep for SDG Talk]
I also went into two I&S classes led by Mr. Grady and Dr. Lundin where Dr. Lundin had asked me to speak about SDG’s in general and my outlook as the Secretary-General. I spoke to each class for about 20 minutes where I grew as a leader and also realized that I had never done this before therefore, this was a challenge that I overcame [LO1 &LO2]. I am grateful for this opportunity given to me by Dr. Lundin. This helped prepare me for the final assembly on October 15th for which I prepared a speech as I was not only hosting the entire OSC community online but I also had the responsibility to address and educate the community on the SDG.

[UN Day Speech – Written Notes]
The order of the assembly as planned was [LO3 & LO4] :

  • Speech by Secretary-General
  • Video Scaffolded by Dr. Lundin
  • Pep talks about COMUN 2022
  • Video about COMUN 2022
  • Reminiscing about past UN Days and online adaptation – SG
  • DP1 Theatre performance
  • Vote of thanks by SG
  • Vote of thanks by Ms. McQuillan

This plan worked out perfectly after a few practice sessions with Dr. Lundin’s supervision and final approval.  I am

satisfied with the final outcome of the assembly showing teamwork [LO5]and embracing our diverse background even when we were online! [LO6 & LO7].
