ATOM Sri Lanka

In March, I saw a new organization open its very first branch in Sri Lanka. They named themselves Atom SL. It was started by a university student in the Phillippines. It was adapted to Sri Lanka by an A-Level Art student from the British School in Colombo. It is an Art based organization that promotes local art and works towards art projects not only appreciating visual arts but also Theatre, Music, Literature, and Media such as Photography. I signed up as a volunteer and I currently work in the Writing and Media department. We handle different social media posts and I have worked on several posts so far. Mainly as a writer.

Writing has always been of interest to me, I have enjoyed it since I can remember. I interviewed for this organization and got accepted as a volunteer in the creatives department. Here is the link to the Instagram page by Atom Lanka.

I have posted 3 posts so far. Here are some examples:

[A post on Geoffery Bawa]
“Walls continuing upright, light colors, and long stairways. Ending up only where guided, only where the light falls, only where the light falls, only where bricks meet neatly. Where are we in the lost world, working, living, existing. Where we ourselves are unaware of us, the reality, not sane. Holding ourselves within, where light once shone.

The continuity of art. It is everywhere, within us and around us. Manifesting this world in mysterious ways, ways we don’t quite fully understand yet. The absolute work of our minds and the power in perception. What we have not yet seen is the pure emotion of the fluidity of art. The history of these tall ceilings and those moments of absolute reality which beyond us finite beings and the edges of a page.

“Architecture cannot be totally explained but must be experienced.” -Geoffrey Bawa

Deshamanya Geoffrey Manning Bawa was one of the most influential Asian architects of all time. He was and is still famous for his principal force of architecture, “tropical modernism”. This we see across so many of his works around Sri Lanka. He has designed and built some of the most famous sights in the nation including the New Sri Lanka Parliament and the Seema Malaka Buddhist Temple on Beira Lake. He has represented artists most beautifully and remarkably. How negative space influences and spreads across a house as its beauty or how the openness of a building can project such calm. Putting it into words won’t do justice to Bawa’s work but we see it reflected in modern-day houses across the country and that is his legacy. Remnants of Bawa are scattered around Sri Lanka and they capture his legacy showing the history, beauty, and charms of the whole nation.

The above is an example of my writing style and how I have adapted to atoms requirements. It was challenging but coming up with new and creative ideas always got me excited and up for the challenge. [LO2]. I have been a part of this organization for 6 months now and I have got to work on many projects. One of them being adapted from the IBDP Visual arts class, Wabi-Sabi. That translated to the art of seeing beauty in impermanent and imperfect things. That post will be coming up in September and was my first solo project.[LO2 & LO3]

We also have several team meetings almost every other week. It is an engaging and enjoyable process to meet so many new people through this organization.[LO5]

I am currently working on a post for Wabi-Sabi as well as a post for what is happening in Afghanistan. These will be out by September! [LO3 & LO4]

Kaduwela Flood relief Project with Atom

During this summer we worked on a flood relief project and collected donations to send to them in order to show ou support. I managed to collect a lot of physical donations from my apartment residents and was able to coordinate the donations in Rajagiriya as well. [LO5, LO7 & LO6]

The project was an extreme success and we managed to donate a lot more than we imagined. This was a new experience and a rewarding one too.

Here are snapshots of the project we all conducted remotely from our homes amidst a pandemic.
