Trying out Salsa!

A couple of days ago, 2 dance teachers came to our apartement to teach Salsa. It was a trial session and as soon as I heard about it, I was immediately down for it. The 2 dance teachers, host proper classes in main colombo and have their own studio. After the covid situation calms down in Colombo, I will definitely try and learn this new dance form. The class was for about 1 hr 30 mins.  The teacher’s name is Mr. Kasun. He was leading with the choreography and the steps he taught us were named Mambo, Rumba, Cuban tap, and reverse tap. I have learned Salsa before but never separately so I wasn’t experienced in this form. This was definitely a challenge because Salsa is very different from other dance forms because it is all about balance and intention. It involves a lot of core, quads and calves. The teachers wanted to challenge us so we did a dance-off as well. It was an intersting experience because we worked as teams to try and win and it was with people we didn’t know. This made me really think that dance does bring people together and that is why I am so passionate about dancing. I measured my heart reate right after the dance-off and it was at 134bpm. I measured it using the app called inPulse. I also wanted to get feedback from my teacher and he was more than happy to provide it. He said that I require more balance and power in my feet so that when i dance, the audience feels the salsa taps. Salsa taps, require strength which he told me to improve on. I think that he is right and if a dancer doesn’t dance for a while, they become rusty and I want to work on that. The CAS learning outcomes involved in this CAS experience are: LO1, LO2 & LO5.
