For this year’s winter gala, I thought I wouldn’t perform, but it turned out differently… In the beginning, I had told myself that I would not have time to take up such a big task and engagement while finishing my Semester 1 summatives, however it all turned out great. I was part of the senior ensemble too, and it was a wonderful experience.
Our senior ensemble had performed multiple songs in the genre of protestant Christian music, and the seniors, including me, had solos with the choir backing. Initially, I was supposed to rap Lecrae, but very last minute I decided to change my song. I had never felt the most comfortable with the song, and I was nervous to rap in front of an audience because maybe I wouldn’t have engaged enough with them. So instead, I asked my friend Akhil to help me choose out a song that would fit my voice, and is somehow related to the Gala’s theme, “Faith and Spirituality”. He gave me the brilliant idea of singing “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” from the musical Hercules. I have to be honest, I still haven’t finished the movie… Anyway, the song went really well! Because it was too late to teach the choir the lyrics and their part, I decided it would be best to sing all the parts. I had asked Akhil to play the piano for me and Mr. Marlon the cajon, it wouldn’t have been possible without them! They took up the task so quickly and we all worked together really well, in my opinion we all had great chemistry on stage. I’m glad this worked, because it sounded more genuine and authentic than it would have with the generated backing tracks.
In the days leading up to the performance, I had a minimum of 2 summatives a day, it was a stressful time. On the day of the concert, I had 3 other tests. Well, I think I did well on them but it was still a tiring time. However, I am beyond joyful and excited with the way the concert turned out, even if I had forgotten the lyrics to a few songs, it only resulted in smiles and laughs from the audience. I am also impatient for the spring gala, which may or may not be the return of Audrey II….
