ISTA TaPS 2019 – Kuala Lumpur (A Theatrical Roller Coaster)

I learned much more than I thought I could have in such a short span of time. Simply said I was a snot-nosed teenager who thought that they knew everything when it comes to theatre. But boy oh boy was I wrong! There are so many more things I have to learn. I learned what seemed like a lifetimes worth of knowledge when in fact it’s just the tip of the iceberg just over this one weekend. things like the way to move my body, a more in-depth view of T.E.A.M (Tension, Emotion, Atmosphere and Meaning) and how it is used in theatre properly. Over ISTA I learnt on how to properly express the tension in a piece and differentiating emotion from the atmosphere. A highlight moment would have to be when I won the rock paper scissors warmup championship among all the students at ISTA. I would describe my experience of ISTA in 3 words, Love, Understanding, Collaborate. I didn’t realise how much I could feel close to a group of people, and I did with my ensemble. Yeah, I’ll admit it, I got attached, but that’s only because they were such an open, loving and creative group of individuals, it was really hard not to love them. When it came to collaboration, the ideas that were brought to the table were diverse and inspired me to use the techniques they used.

The ISTA Festival was another opportunity for me to consider things like specific aspects like physical theatre in which we would do long strenuous warmups in order to achieve the level of tenacity to show proper tension and emotion to present the desire meaning in an certain atmosphere, creativity by using a variety of starting points as springboards to expose us to a more diverse themes, directing and experience with different production elements, especially things like staging and other looked over skills. This, in turn, affected my personal approach to creating original theatre. This piqued my interest in physical theatre and what it means to portray a story through movement and a limited amount of words at given parts.
