Service Spotlight: ‘Care for Paws’ in September
As for the first couple weeks of the service group Care for Paws to be running for the 2023 – 2024 year, as a team, we have made quite a few highlights in progress so far.
Firstly, to begin this year of service, as one out of the three service leaders, alongside Lara and Maya from DP 2, I helped out with introducing the new members of the group to what our service aims for, and the outline of our plans for this year which our service coordinator and supervisor, Ms. Francemone had set out. This includes an upcoming sterilization camp in October, plans for fundraising, promotions, etc. We also got to know each of the members individually for why they joined this service group and got to understand the perspectives of the different student’s personal goals in the service as well.
As mentioned above, before we plan to have this camp next month, we aimed for some fundraising activities. One of these activities that we had was on the 16th of September, which was the day of the SCN Welcome Back Picnic, where we sold soft drinks to the OSC school community. We had strong success in this activity of selling soft drinks as a way of raising money from the annual sports day earlier this year when I was in 10th grade. By the end, we raised a Rs. 33,000 profit and were able to gain lots of support from the school OSC community to help us out in the future.
But before this day, on the 15th of September, during the Primary Schools morning assembly, we as Care for Paws were invited to speak to the younger students of the school about our service group. In this morning’s assembly, alongside with Maya and Lara (the other two service leaders), we spoke to the kids about what Care for Paws is, our intentions and purpose, and how we accomplish this. For many years, the Primary Students have been handing donations over to our group, such as from the personal activities they do, then raising the money and donating to help with our goals. In this assembly, we also gave everyone who has given us donations a big thank you, and gave the kids an insight as to how their donations have helped.
