Eco schools service- road clean up

On February 3rd, a team of Eco Schools service group members opted to participate in a road clean up, cleaning the road area at the back entrance of our school. We divided ourselves amongst three groups and went in three separate directions to maximize the amount of garbage and recyclable material that could be collected. We cleaned the sides of the road towards the main road, and I couldn’t help but wonder why people don’t pay attention to the cries of the environment, upon collecting tons of waste including empty glass bottles, aluminum cans, plastic shopping bags, yogurt cups, plastic spoons and tons of other waste products that could be recycled.

Me and Senaya, asked a nearby neighbour what was going to be done with the massive number of glass bottles and plastic debris that had been accumulated right next to their house, just beside the wall of our school. She stated that they will be collected every Sunday by the waste collection authorities. However, we were skeptical of her response since we noticed considerable soot streaks on the wall, implying that they were burning the rubbish rather than disposing  it in an environmentally acceptable manner.

We later handed over the waste that we collected to a man from the “Spar” Supermarket, who told us that it would be sorted and recycled.
