ESS Meets CAS ?
You guessed it, this is an ESS post. I really thought this would be interesting to put in this blog because even though this is academic, it still related to activity since we’ll be walking a lot and also creativity since I’ll be taking photos and uploading them on iNaturalist.
Ah, iNaturalist
iNaturalist is an app where you can upload photos of an organism (animal or plant) and identify it before uploading it. We use this in ESS so we can learn about the different organisms that are here in Sri Lanka, or anywhere in the world when people are out in SAISA and ISTA for example.
T’was Interesting
We went to Divasaru Park in Thalawathugoda, 5 minutes away from OSC. We sent off to find many things in our trip. We saw many things like hibiscuses, frogs, birds (many, many, many birds), squirrels, and many more. Even though it was really hot, we made the most of it.
Of course, me being the photographer, I took a lot of photos on this. My favorite photo would probably be the red hibiscus. It looked really pretty and as the biggest flower fan, I just had to take a photo.
We also used Mr Lockwood’s iconic German binoculars, which were very high quality and made everything seem like it was animated. It was a very cool thing to see, must try them again.
We also worked together to count the couples we saw, and boy, we saw a lot (a total of 11).
How to Use This
iNaturalist is very easy to use, but for everyone’s sake, I’ll write down the steps:
- Take a photo. It can be on your normal camera or on the iNaturalist camera, any works, I tried.
- Upload it onto the app.
- Identify the species. You can either wait for the app to give recommendations or you can just simply type up the organism you think it is. In my experience, waiting for the app to give recommendations is the best idea since people can say you didn’t put the right organism.
It’s Mr Lockwood, of course you’re going to have a picture of him with his binoculars.
