Gecko Gear Service – 16/11/2023
The OSC gecko gear service is the service group in which I am currently a member. My friends Darius and Zoe founded this small group at the start of the school year. Ms. Sue oversees and monitors our development and work. This particular service group really stood out to me at the start of the year and pulled in my interests. This is because I adore designing a wide range of different items and enjoy working with art in general. Modern streetwear in the fashion sector is one of my current interests. Streetwear design is a casual clothing style that gained popularity in the 1990s. It evolved from New York hip-hop fashion and California surf culture before incorporating aspects of skateboarding, 1980s nostalgia, and Japanese street fashion. Lewis Hamilton, one of my favorite Formula One drivers, first exposed me to this design style. Hamilton is known for arriving at race weekends in a range of flamboyant and colorful outfits that capture attention from almost every direction, as he walks down the F1 paddock.
Because of this personal connection, I believed that joining Gecko Gear would provide me the opportunity to experiment with making apparel for myself. Initially, I believed it would be an excellent learning experience that could lead to opportunities to pursue fashion and industrial design at university. We have just completed our first quarter of service at school, and in hindsight, I can say that as a member of the gecko gear team, we successfully raised over $1000 in profit to fund projects and other services within the OSC community. We were able to do this by selling traveling hoodies for the SAISA volleyball and swimming teams. One of my proudest achievements and contributions to our service was creating the new OSC supporter t-shirt, which was sold to our entire OSC community to raise revenue for our service groups’ activities. Overall, we haven’t had too many difficult challenges, but our main obstacle was negotiating with the clothing suppliers to see whether we could organize enough materials to make a large amount of playing kits and hoodies to satisfy all of our teams. On a personal note this service quarter has been really enjoyable and interacting with the group has been a very nice learning experience. Some of the goals that we are going to set for the upcoming SAISA season two is to work together in creating a New playing kit for the basketball and track team.
