Sandeep’s CAS Journey

My extra-curricular activities at OSC

Singapore Art & Street Photography

Beautiful, vibrant colors left, right, and center. That is how I would describe my experience going through Singapore’s downtown streets, soaking up all the creativity and imagination that its walls had to give.

During my summer vacation, I had the opportunity to visit Singapore. I decided to channel my inner tourist and visit the art museums and streets filled with abstract graffiti. I’m now studying HL Art for my IB diploma. Coming into DP2, I wanted to visit as many art galleries as possible to gain inspiration for my work. One of the highlights of my trip was going to the Singapore Museum of Art and Science. I found the paintings on display fascinating and engaging. For example, many of the exhibitions in the art museum were designed to provide an immersive experience for the audience, allowing me to engage in some of the work on show. I know this seems crazy, but believe me, it was just like that. To give you an idea, the product on display was a bridge composed of various pieces of glow in the dark wood planks. The bridge was put in a dark environment to highlight its glow-in-the-dark planks. Each plank was placed at a different height, making it difficult for the individual trying to pass through it. I was so inspired by this work that I thought the idea of creating a 3D art piece in which others could participate was incredibly fascinating, and I hope to be able to create something similar in the future.

My favorite piece of artwork at the Museum of Art and Science was a room covered in LED crystals. The space was covered in clear crystals that lit up in different colors but what made the experience truly unique was that glass mirrors surrounded it. This created a pretty fantastic illusion that led you to believe that the room stretched on forever and that there were more crystals than there were in reality. I was immersed in the magnificence of the art I was standing in. Visiting the Museum of Art and Science made me understand that visual art is much more than simply paint on canvas; the experience inspired me to strive to explore beyond the traditional limits of art.

The final highlight of my trip to Singapore was the chance to practice my street photography. I enjoy photography. It’s a hobby of mine that allows me to express myself and be creative. My interest developed once I saw photos of myself participating in sports such as football, track, and surfing. These photos were taken by experienced photographers, and when I viewed them, I understood that I, too, wanted to take up photography and start producing my own pictures. I went to Chinatown, which is located in the middle of Singapore. I used my Canon DSLR camera to photograph some of the street art and graffiti I observed. Enjoy!
