Unity in Diversity Day 6/10/2023

6/10/2023 – United Nations Day

We had our annual Unity in Diversity Day (United Nations Day_) at school last Friday. United Nations Day celebrations at schools are used to raise awareness of the various cultures and places of the world from which people come, and to educate children on how everyone can coexist peacefully. I’ve been attending Colombo’s international school for the past five years. I am glad and proud to be a Sri Lankan student. Since starting at the school, I’ve made a lot of new friends from other countries and cultural backgrounds. This was something I was not used to in my previous schools because the kids were mostly Sri Lankan.

Joining this new group of friends was a very enjoyable experience for me because it was something completely new. I quickly realized that my new friends were not like the other boys and girls I had known all my life and grew up with. What I mean is that many of the sports and hobbies that my new friends enjoy playing/watching are quite distinct from those of my previous circle of friends.  This was in no means a bad thing, I found it really cool because it also gave me an opportunity to bond with a new group of individuals and learn their cultures and preferences over time. UN day is something that is annually celebrated each year in OSC. As a Sri Lankan student something that I personally really enjoy is being able to wear a Sarong each year. I really like colors and patterns and I find that sarongs are a really cool team of clothing that is often composed of a variety of different patterns and colors making each garment unique. I often like to switch up the sarong each year.
