Taking Over Gecko.inc as the next Generation of leaders

Gecko inc is a service group dedicated to providing education in water safety and learning the basic fundamental skills from swimming; this service group initially worked with a small school close to OsC and provided this service to their younger kids in grades 1-3. However, with the recent pandemic, we haven’t been able to bring the kids into the campus and find alternative options. After being thin this service group for five years, I have finally given a chance to become a leader alongside 2 of my peers.

Our service group is taking th global issue of the inaccessibility to water safety education in Sri Lanka. with Sri Lanka being surrounded by the largest body of water, the ocean, and has many lakes and rivers, it is a risk for many young children who don’t know the basics of water safety. therefore, gecko inc aims to help underprivileged children in learning the fundamentals so that they can be safe around large bodies of water. Gecko inc’s goal directly relates to learning outcome LO6 Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

Last week, the three leaders, including myself, met with the service coordinator to discuss our service and plans with my other leaders Fiona and Anna, we made a list of plans we want to continue and plans for the future of the service and how it will adapt to the conditions we are in.

The list of priorities we want to start with would be to continue with our social media content. As we created multiple social media pages such as YouTube and Instagram, the goal would be to upload all the last term content. Another goal would be to finish our second swim education video, which still needs to be edited. this is an example of the Learning out come LO2 Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process, as we have been struck with a challenge which usually renders our service unable to operate at its normal routine, but we have undertaken this challenged and developed knew skills such as using social media and video editing skills to overcome this bump in the road.

Other than the social media, other plans we had were to continue the service during these times. We had two paths; one was for the DLP(distance learning program) and when we get into school in person. Our plan for DLP would be to create land workout strengthening videos for the primary kids, and we would get the primary PE coordinator to help pass the video out. Furthermore, our plans for when we get I person for school would be to discuss with the Primary PE coordinator the possibility of adding an after school activity on Thursday for primary kids so our service could help coach and train the younger generation of swimmers and members of society I. Water safety and fundamentals of swimming. this process of planning for the future of the service is linked to learning outcome LO3 Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience; as a leader alongside my peers, we are initiating new ideas that help us increase the relevance of our service while also helping us achieve our goals. We are also planning and creating an outline of possible activities for next year. If we are to be stuck indoors or have the luxury of returning to school, we will be prepared to be a smooth transition for the service next year.

overall i am also approaching the learning outcome, LO7 Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.
