South Asian Club

The South Asian Club or SAC is a club at AISD that displays the rich culture of South Asia at AISD. The purpose of SAC is to emphasize its appreciation towards South Asian culture but, it is not exclusive to only South Asian natives. I personally think this is the beauty of the club.

Every Wednesday 30 people from different nationalities come together and we plan special events. Often times these meetings are loud and rambunctious. There are members spewing Bangla slang across the room. Even though these meetings end up getting off-topic it’s always really fun. SAC was always a way for me to appreciate the two cultures that I am from.

SAC often hosts two main events every year. The SAC fair and the SAC cultural show. However, we do also host small sales from time to time as fundraisers. A popular fundraiser is Biriyani sales. The Pakistani students come together to bring three big pots of biriyani. Even though they brought three big pots, it often sold in 20 minutes. It was very popular among the HS community.

This year for the SAC food fair I brought in a popular Sri Lankan restaurant called Taste of Lanka to cater. I managed to contact the owner of the restaurant and tell her about the SAC fair and she was excited about the idea of her restaurant being a vendor there. I spent a long time working out the logistics with the security department and the quantity of food needed. In the end, it all worked out and it was very successful. The Taste of Lanka stall was one of the most popular food stalls.

The fair was a night full of kutthu, henna and desi dancing.

SAC was an important club to me. It taught me about the beauty of my own culture and it also made me see the beauty of South Asian culture.
