Football w/ Middle School Girls🥅

As the SAISA girls football season is fast approaching, my friend and I (we were captains of the football team last year) wanted to take some time and coach the middle school and MYP 4 girls. This season we really want to do everything we can to place in the top 3, and that definitely means starting to train early. Even this student-initiated session was for sure better than last year’s first session, but if I’m being honest, the girls and myself too still have a lot of work to do. At the end of the session we had asked the girls one specific thing they would like to focus on once the season starts. I found that if one starts to set smaller goals and then takes initiative in order to complete this goal, it is a good way to improve (by working on smaller things, which build end up building up). For me personally, this goal is to become a lot quicker and more consistent with my ball movement, control and skill. In order to achieve this goal I could try and do some juggling in my free time, do wall passes or/and do small ball drills. Additionally, every Sunday I play football with my brother, some kids from school (around 10-14 years), and some parents who also join. Funnily enough this actually gets quite competitive and sometimes the football being played is at a high level (probably because these kids spend more time playing football than walk).

As I co-coach/lead with my friend, we are becoming aware of our own strengths as coaches and as players. There is no supervisor for this activity, and like mentioned above, it is 100% student lead. As some girls’ football skills are not at a high level yet (as well as my own if I’m being honest), we are undertaking new challenges, and helping them develop new skills. Being honest, we also have to persevere in action, as I already know achieving our goal for top 3 will be a great challenge. Finally, as this is a team sport, we are collaboratively working with others, as well as me collaboratively working with my friend in order to coach these girls.
