Service Goals & Service Update🎀

For service, we have started a bunch of different small projects. We’ve made an Instagram account (@oscjusticeandequality) that I now manage. I’ve made a goal to constantly update the page every Thursday (as well as during the week when there are news/inspiring posts from other accounts). We also made sanitary boxes for all the girls bathrooms, as well as the female staff bathrooms. The boxes contain both tampons and pads, which are refilled every Thursday. Finally, in the “main” bathroom at our school, some previous students painted the stall doors with inspiring quotes (around 4 years ago). However, my service wanted to repaint the doors as the paint is coming off, and the quotes are considered “cringe” by many girls at school. Thus, I divided the people in my service into different groups, one to work on social media, one to work on the doors, one to work on re-filling boxes, and newly, one to make t-shirt designs. We are planning on getting service merch/shirts in order to raise money for us to continue to provide sanitary products for the bathrooms, as well as for donating money to less privileged women at foundations/schools.

Additionally, the first post was about feminism, and common misconceptions people have about it; such as, how many men (and women too) think about feminism being “women are superior to men”, whilst it’s actually just about equal treatment between the sexes. We also wanted to highlight how various people think that sexism and feminism are old concepts, thus, we used some data/facts from the World Bank (a reliable source), to prove how relevant and actual sexism still is in today’s society. Finally, we mentioned the main goals of feminists, which include stopping the oppression of women in law and in practice, shedding light on the issue of sexual and gender-based violence, and overall just getting equal treatment between all genders. See the full post HERE! In addition, we’ve also started to do something called “book of the week”, which is where we recommend a book that explores ideas of feminism and women empowerment. We make this into an Instagram reel and share this on our story/highlights. It’s better to make it a reel as we have a short description on the book and a quote from it in the short clip (reel).

Finally, we have various goals for the future which include starting to work with women foundations, making t-shirts for our service, spreading awareness on our Instagram page (the post we are currently working on is about beauty standards set upon women) , doing fundraisers and donating to different foundations/ women in need. Also, something worth mentioning is that during our first session, we made overall service goals for the year – whether that be in or outside of OSC.
