Service has begun once again at OSC, but now in online school we have had to change our approach. For Recycling & Sustainability we have come up with multiple ways to continue the mission of our service while at home.

Now as a co-leader of the service, I have helped come up with ideas and to organize initiatives to do so. First, we decided to begin by keeping members of our service engaged with the environment. For our first service meeting I created a Padlet in which everyone would add what they are doing at home to stay green. We added different sections, being: Waste Separation, Green Energy, Home Gardening, Upcycling and Local Products. If anyone did things at home for each section, they would add a picture of it onto the Padlet.

From these posts we will be encouraging service members to find ways to add on what they don’t have so far, and to improve their homes to be more green. This is the current task of the service, as many people are finding out different ways to be more green. This ranges from tracking where trash goes to planting a home garden or using reusable bags when shopping.

This concept has been quite successful, and it brings forward the initiative of improving your homes to be more green. Because of this we may have a similar activity for the whole school, maybe bringing in house points and giving them to people who make the most strides being eco-friendly at home.

One more thing we are building towards is logging recycling centers to Google Maps. Right now there aren’t that many, and the image below is what currently shows up.

By logging the many that are missing, we hope to make it easy for everyone to recycle at home by identifying places which they could go too.

Overall, though service is now much more different we are still achieving our same goals, just at home and not at school. This is in fact a great new opportunity for those whose houses are not as green.
