Home Run 2019
The Housing and Habitat service group began to plan for a Home Run taking place in November 2019. I was assigned poster duty and, after going through several edits, created 2 different posters to advertise the event.
Home Run 2020
Shortly after teaming up with the Care for Paws service group, we realized there were no days that would be ideal for us to host the event. After a brief discussion and consensus, we felt it would be beneficial to change the date from November 16th to January 15th as every weekend before and after would clash with another event.
Eventually, the day of the Home Run arrived, and the housing service met at the school at 5 am to begin setting up the track with signs and tables with water. It was shortly before that when we realized that neither the shirts nor the water had arrived. Two of our leaders went with some money to buy some water for the run while the third took the rest of us to begin setting up the tables on the track.
When we got back to the school, we discovered that the shirts had, in fact, arrived and we all put one on. Our water problem was also solved as Josh and Nehe came through with several large water bottles, which required us to do a second lap on which we would wait at our stations and prepare for the runners.
I waited with my fellow Housing member Arnav and Yangki from Care for Paws, while we pre-poured cups of water for the runners. We waited for about 40 minutes until the runners started passing by. It very quickly got quite hectic and just when we started getting used to it, we realized that there was no one left.
Once the truck pulled up, we packed away our table and water, then escorted the last runner who seemed to be struggling to a street near the school. We waited at the school, congratulating people, pouring water and packing up until the photo of the participants was taken and everyone left.
All in all, it was fun working the Home Run again. I got to show off my graphic design skill when making the posters and my water-pouring skills when the runners stopped at our stall. Granted, the waiting and worrying weren’t as fun, but at least I didn’t have to run it.
