Malith's CAS Journey

To sit down together and laugh about these days.

CAS Goals: Your mission, should you chose to accept.

[C] MUN

MUN has always been an activity I was passionate with – even though I started just a year ago. Since then, I have attended 3 conferences and racked up 3 medals – a 100% award rate, if you will. With roughly two years more MUN left inside me before I graduate, my goals for MUN will be quite ambitious – but attainable, nonetheless.

COMUN ’23 will mark the first conference that I will be attending as anything but a delegate – I was fortunate enough to get the position of Head of Operations. Apart from making sure that conference is nothing but a success, from start to finish, adding a bit of Midas’ touch is also up my agenda. Other conferences have had a plethora of successes and failures – the plan is to transfer the wins into COMUN and steer clear of the mistakes. One of the main ideas is to revamp all the committees – seeing the same old can get quite repetitive – while keeping the barebone structure that COMUN has followed.

Furthermore, I would like to see a few award winners from the OSC delegation at COMUN. Unfortunately, or fortunately, award winners don’t breed themselves – and that segways to my next goal of trying to teach and equip a capable MUN delegation. The general consensus is that our delegation this year is quite sizeable relative to previous years – and even though time is of the essence, they will remain a high priority for me, especially since I have come from a school who takes MUN very seriously. Everything from basic committee procedure, to the nitty gritty that formulate the marginal point gap between HC and BD, I will attempt to teach.

[C] Piano

I have never been consistent with learning the piano – something I regret. I have passed the basic grade 1 exam and laid a stable foundation to break away from being an intermediate, but never took the first step. So, the goal is quite simple – to learn, in ascending order of difficulty, a list of piano pieces which I have compiled. These range from Fur Elise, all the way to the Interstellar theme. Each step up has a technique or skill which I will gain, and by the end, I should be able to conquer any piece with relative ease.

[A] Badminton

Badminton, admittedly, is a sport I have never tried to perfect – most of my skill comes from swinging a bat in cricket. That is exactly what I hope to change, especially with SAISA Badminton coming up in spring. With the help of a coach, I hope to learn the ins and outs of the sport – all the way to an intermediate level before February of next year. As for specific goals, they range from the basics on how to serve well and, to a more intermediate level, how to manage my stamina for the duration of the game.

[A] Cricket

The story is a lot different for Cricket – a sport which I have been playing since I was as little as 7. As far as my skill goes, it is heavily concentrated in my batting ability, with my bowling skills being quite beginner – I still have not learned the proper round-the-arm technique as well. Even though I do not plan to take cricket seriously – leaving it as more of a fun hobby – I would like to learn proper bowling techniques, by the end of this year. That would require me to monitor my progress weekly by improving my swing and release, until it is a perfect circle without even a slight bend in my elbow.

[S] US Peace Corps Cultural Exchange Program

Bridging the gap between the ever-modernizing urban and the stagnant rural areas is a necessity – and that is one of the main reasons why I chose this service. Being able to give back to children of my identity – students – and trying to share our gifted privileges with them is a lovely prospect. However, my goals try to extend beyond a virtual meetup once every week. With the help of others, I hope to extend more support to these children – maybe in the form of book/shoes/stationary donations, through a physical meetup one day. Though the logistics of such an activity can be challenging, especially collecting an impactful amount of items, I remain hopeful that it can be done.
