Unity and Diversity Day

(Source: United Nations)

The Unity and Diversity Day is a special day where we are celebrating all the different nationalities present on the campus. This year, on October 6, we all had the chance to march under the flag of our native country and represent our own culture. After this, our grade, DP1, had the opportunity to organize a workshop for other grades. My partner and I were assigned 10th grade and together we worked on the SDG 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” to create a workshop based on it. According to the UN, SDG 16’ aim is to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels. We presented them the SDG and what it covers and then we played the Mafia game, a game where civilians have to vote out the mafia before he kills everyone. The aim of this activity was for them to make connections between the concept of the game and the SDG 16. After this, we went to the canteen where parents prepared a ton of food from their country. We had the chance to taste food from India, Korea, China, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Belgium, Germany, France and a lot of other countries. All the stands were delicious! Following this, we went back to the class and started the second part of the workshop. We proposed a Role Play including the following characters: judge, witness, jury, criminal and lawyer. We gave them three scenarios to act as a way for the jury to determine if the “criminal” was guilty or not. At the end, we asked them again what were the connections between the purpose of this game and the SDG 16.

At the end of this day, I was very glad of what we accomplished. Everything went well and I really  enjoyed doing the workshop which allowed me to develop my leadership and organization skills.
